March of Giants review roundup: no official score yet, but playtest impressions praise the RTS army control and question 35-minute match lengths.

There is no official March of Giants review score yet. The game is not released, Steam still shows "No user reviews," and everything published so far is playtest feedback, preview coverage and creator commentary. This page collects what those sources actually said, and marks the parts that come from an older build.

Is there an official March of Giants review?

No. March of Giants has no launch build, no review embargo, and no Metacritic-style aggregate, because the game is still in a Steam playtest ahead of Early Access in Summer 2027.

The Steam page is explicit: "There are no reviews for this product," and the release date is listed as coming soon. That means there is nothing official to score.

What does exist is a long-running community impressions post on r/MarchOfGiants, preview articles such as the cgmagonline piece shared to r/pcgaming, and match commentary from creators who played the playtest. Each is worth reading, but none of them is a finished review.

What the community impressions post said

The most detailed early feedback is a post titled "Overall Impressions" on r/MarchOfGiants, written roughly a year before the Pioneer Playtest, so it describes the Closed Alpha build rather than today's version.

On the positive side, the author praised the "great design," said they loved "the RTS and army management," and called the heroes snappy with upgrades that "seem meaningful." They also liked that team fights "last more than 2 seconds" and that quick play is genuinely quick.

On the negative side, they flagged audio, complaining about voice lines "popping up every five seconds," and argued that melee Giants "simply don't feel good" against ranged opponents. Their summary was a 7/10 with the note that the game "has a lot of potential."

The match-length argument

The loudest criticism in that post was game time. The author wrote that their "average game time is always gonna be 35+ minutes" and called that "completely unacceptable," arguing that March of Giants should chase the accessible, shorter design of Heroes of the Storm.

Commenters split hard on this. One player said they did not mind 30-45 minute games "if the RTS aspect gets expanded on," but complained that some matches drag past 60 minutes because teams cannot close games out. Another simply replied that 30-35 minutes would be the ideal sweet spot.

This is the single most useful thing to check against the current build, because Ubisoft published patch notes specifically about match length during the Closed Alpha. Whether those changes solved it is exactly what the current playtest should tell us.

The melee versus ranged debate

The same post argued that melee Giants get "smashed by any player who knows how to play range," and suggested an inert health regeneration passive as a fix.

One reply disagreed in detail, pointing out that melee Giants often build health regeneration and shields as their first items, that ranged champions could do the same but would sacrifice damage, and that ranged units have weaker wave clear against rallied soldiers. The reply concluded that the problem was player skill rather than the roster.

That thread also produced the sharpest balance claim in the material: one commenter wrote that "Goliath... is insanely overpowered." Individual balance calls like this should be treated as opinions from one build, not verified facts, so mark them 待确认.

What previews and casters said

Preview coverage was more positive than the alpha feedback. A r/pcgaming thread linking a cgmagonline preview was titled "A MOBA That Actually Feels Different," describing the game as taking "the familiar MOBA formula, throws in RTS elements and giant battlefield commanders, and somehow makes the whole thing feel surprisingly fresh."

In that thread, one commenter highlighted the reported 15-20 minute match length as "really appealing," which directly contradicts the 35-plus minute complaint from the older build. The disagreement itself is a useful signal that pacing has changed between versions.

Creator commentary was warm as well. The caster behind "March of Giants - New Massive Scale MOBA" called the game "really addicting" once you get the hang of it, and argued it "adds more than it takes away from other MOBAs," while acknowledging it is a harder sell for players who prefer simpler games.

Technical and quality-of-life notes

Creator commentary also flagged missing features rather than bugs. The same caster noted there is "no replay functionality yet, though it's planned in the short notice," and had to call matches live as a result.

They also described how progression works in the current build: there are "no levels at all," and reaching merit thresholds unlocks more abilities, while items are installed onto your Warshell and augments come from map objectives. That is a substantial departure from standard MOBA levelling, and it is the part most reviewers are still working out.

Long matches were still visible in playtest-era commentary, with one full match commentary running well past the half-hour mark before a Bastion fell to the Sovereign Gun.

How to weigh a March of Giants review right now

Check the date first. Anything written during the Closed Alpha, including the well-known 7/10 impressions post, describes a build where itemisation, Soldier roles, Battleworks and map control have since changed.

Check whether the claim is verifiable. Statements about match length, the siege dozer or the Colossus can be compared against official posts and the in-game timers, while claims about win rates, exact damage numbers or tier rankings cannot be verified and should be marked 待确认.

The most useful reviews to read today are playtest-era ones, and the most useful thing you can do is form your own opinion during a free playtest window rather than relying on a year-old thread.

The consensus across impressions

Pull the sources together and a pattern appears. Almost everyone praises the same thing: the army layer. The alpha impressions post loved the RTS and army management, the r/pcgaming preview called the combination of RTS elements and giant commanders surprisingly fresh, and a playtest player described the interplay of defence and offence as great decision making.

Pacing is the contested area. One source reports 15-20 minute matches as a selling point, while alpha-era players describe 35-minute averages and occasional 60-minute games that neither team can close. Both cannot describe the same build, which is the strongest argument for checking dates.

Polish complaints cluster in the same places across sources: audio chatter, melee balance, and quality-of-life tools such as replays and chat. Those are fixable items rather than structural objections, which is worth remembering when you read a harsh comment.

What a fair score looks like right now

Because the game is unreleased, any score is a score of the current build rather than the finished game. The clearest example is the well-known 7/10 impressions post, which was written during the Closed Alpha and explicitly describes a build whose systems have since been reworked.

A fair reading is therefore comparative. Is the army layer interesting? Most sources say yes. Is the pacing right? The sources disagree, and that is the open question. Are presentation and communication tools finished? No, and the developers say so themselves.

Where to read more

The richest single source remains the Overall Impressions post on r/MarchOfGiants, as long as you read it as a time capsule. The r/pcgaming preview thread is better for seeing how sceptical veterans of other MOBAs react.

For systems rather than opinions, watch the developer-narrated match from the official premiere. It explains what the map does without offering a verdict, which is the most useful thing for forming your own view.
